Propositions for Impracticality
2021 – ongoing
These installations are the first two instalments in an ongoing series that presents alternative suggestions for familiar objects. In one, a table’s robust and durable surface is replaced by a soft and unstable sponge, while in the other, a spoon is deliberately made hollow, disrupting its core function. Despite rendering the objects ‘unusable’, these changes result in curious modes of being: not only revealing unusual formal qualities, but also enabling an unexpected set of actions and situations. Embracing the quietly absurd, the series aims to question established methods of interacting with our environment and the objects in it. It proposes that seemingly irrational gestures can be the starting point of interesting new possibilities.
These installations were exhibited as part of the group show Some Exercises in Futility at Shun Li Industrial Complex during Singapore Art Week 2024.
